House Passes Two Bills Honoring Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives passed two bills honoring the lives and legacies of veterans. These bills include naming the VA outpatient facility in Ventura, California after Captain Rosemary Bryant Mariner, a member of the Navy’s first flight-training class for women, the first woman to command a naval aviation squadron, and a lifelong advocate for women’s military service. The House voted to rename the VA community-based outpatient clinic in San Angelo, Texas after Colonel Charles and JoAnne Powell, two dedicated public servants who served San Angelo for many years.
“VA has more than 1,200 healthcare facilities nationwide, yet, as of the beginning of this Congress, just two of these facilities bore the names of women veterans,” said Chairman Takano. “Today, the House of Representatives voted to honor the life and legacy of Captain Rosemary Bryant Mariner by renaming the VA outpatient facility in Ventura in her honor. Captain Mariner was a trailblazer who, for a time, was commander of the Navy’s Tactical Warfare Squadron at nearby Naval Air Station Point Mugu. I’m glad the House voted to honor Captain Mariner’s service, along with the service of Colonel Charles and Mrs. JoAnne Powell of Texas, with facilities named in their memory.”
